This is how a portion of my phone conversation went with my niece yesterday:
Niece: My mom said it's spring now, but I don't see any butterflies out!!
Me: Well, it has to get warmer, and the sun has to shine more.
Niece: I'll be sad for the bunny rabbits and the birds then .... b/c they're fur will make them too hot!
Me: It's ok - when the weather gets warmer the bunnies fur falls out - not all of it, but enough where it's not too hot for it anymore.
Niece: Ohhhhh! .... Does the same thing happen for the birds? Does the birds fur fall out too??
(I was trying not to laugh when she said this)
Me: Well, the birds mault, which means their "feathers" fall out. So in a sense, yes.
I know my niece will not read this for quite some time, but I have to make a true confession here.....I was just talking off the cuff. This just sounded logical to me. Oh how I dread the day when she'll say, "Well, I read in a book that actually......*blah blah blah* --in essence, You're wrong Auntie Jessica!" :( *sniff* Of course, her saying, "I read somewhere...." is inevitable b/c that's exactly how her mama is! :)
Ahhh, too cute - bird's fur!

Actually, as far as I know, you were right. It is called "molting" and our bird does it once or twice each year. Even though he is inside, he still loses feathers and grows some new ones too. It's the same thing dogs and cats (that live outdoors) do as well. So, you didn't mislead her after all! :)
