07-07-07

Today after leaving Toys R' Us Mom and I were getting in the car, when we noticed the people in front of us were making a fuss about something. After listening for a second, we realized they had locked their baby in the car - by accident. I figured they could handle it. I mean "Everyone" has cell phones these days, and there were 3 adults, so I was really going to leave. My mom said, Maybe I should offer to call the fire dept. I said, ok, so we got out of the car and walked over to the family to offer our assistance. Come to find out they didn't have a cell phone, the baby is only 3 weeks old, and they were trying everything to get into the car and it just was not working.

So mom made the call, a few other shoppers came by and tried different things to get into the car, but to no avail. I ran out to the side walk to flag down whatever rescue squad came. It felt like every second that passed was 5 minutes. I finally heard the sirens blaring!!!! Looking left to right I tried to figure out which direction they were going to be coming. Finally caught sight of 2 squad cars and a fire engine. Ran to the entrance of the parking lot waving my arm like I was directing traffic. Another man starting doing the same a few yards down not only to show the squad cars where to go, but to stop traffic from moving within the parking lot.

It took a lot longer than I expected for them to get the car door open. When the fireman lifted the baby out of the car you couldn't even tell there was a baby in the blanket she was sooooo little. I felt bad for the mom b/c it really was an innocent thing that happened. Her friend put the baby down on the front seat, and turned to get something, and the door shut. It wasn't even closed all the way, but just enough where noone could open it. With all these terrible deaths that have happened with kids left in cars though I'm sure that was just added stress. It's not like they left the kid in the car and went shopping, but for someone just happening upon the scene, you could very easily come to that assumption.

We tried to say a few comforting things to the friend who was crying (I'm sure due to guilt) and then after everything mellowed down we headed out. A little ways down the road I yelled: Today's 07-07-07 The Luckiest Day Ever!!! :D :D We decided we should treat ourselves to something special since we were involved in a heroic act for the day. Granted, we didn't climb in a burning building, or save someone from a bullet, BUT helping someone out in the time of need is very VERY special.

I'm glad there was a happy ending to this story! I'm sure that date is one the mother will not soon forget - what a story she'll have to tell her daughter in a couple years!
